The Shawn Hornbeck Foundation this week expanded its popular MyID4Life Child ID program to include DNA Archival Kits. The MyID4Life DNA Archival Kit uses state-of-the-art technology to store DNA at room temperature. DNA is obtained by rubbing a swab on the inside of the mouth to collect cheek (buccal) cells. The swab is blotted on a special paper that is treated with chemicals to sterilize and stabilize the DNA.
The kits use the same products and procedures as used by Federal Law Enforcement agencies and the United States Military. The DNA sample is placed in a forensic quality foil-lined envelope for storage, and will last an average of 10 years. The DNA Archival Kits are available for an $8.00 donation, which is used to further expand the MyID4Life program.
